Just order a large reel of LED strip and cut off what you need for your gadget. One very convenient property of these types of LED strips is that you can just cut the strip to any length you desire. The latter is some places rebranded as SuperLED. Other common ones are WS2801 and APA102, which are both synchronous. ![]() These are asynchronous LEDs and some places rebranded as NeoPixel. ![]() Some of the common ones are WS2811/ WS2812 and their related versions. These synchronous LED strips with dedicated clock signal are considered to be more robust than the asynchronous ones with only three conductors. On some types of LED strips you also have a clock signal as a fourth conductor. Three of these conductors are supply voltage, ground and data signal. Along the strip there are either three or four electrical conductors, depending on the type. We’re going to concentrate on LED strips in this blog post.Ī LED strip is just a row a LEDs, often with adhesive on one side like a tape. These LEDs often come in the form of a LED strip or a LED matrix, but can also be individual LEDs connected together in a row with cable between them. One answer to this is LEDs that you can individually control with a low amount of wires (independent of the number of LEDs). In this post we’re going to talk a bit about digital LEDs in general as well as give some examples on how to use the FastLED library. Programming LEDs is no exception, and the FastLED library certainly simplifies this process. There are Arduino libraries for almost everything, and with one or more of these in hand you can make awesome gadgets, even as a clueless beginner. You can cut this stuff pretty easily with wire cutters, there are cut-lines every 5cm (3 LEDs each), and trim off the weatherproof cover with a hobby knife. Once the adhesive backing has been removed, the strips are not returnable! The silk-screening and LED brightness of the strips may vary slightly from reel to reel. ![]() That means you cannot put them into a pool, lake, aquarium, etc. They are for indoor use or light outdoor use without direct sun/water. Please Note: these strips are weatherproof so they'll be more rugged than uncoated strips, but they not designed for long term submersion in water, especially chlorinated water, or exposed to UV (eg sunlight) for extended periods of time. Great for decorating your bike or art project, costuming or funky fashion.įor powering, a good 12V supply is key. There's a 3M adhesive strip on the back which should stick to most smooth surfaces. We splurged and got the weatherproof kind with white background color. Use any NPN or N-channel MOSFET (although the big powerful kind is good for a large strip) and PWM the inputs for color-mixing. The way they are wired, you will need a 9-12VDC power supply and then ground the R/G/B pins to turn on the three colors. There are 60 RGB LEDs per meter - twice as many as our other strip, and you can control the entire strip at once with any microcontroller and three transistors.
